Mhairi McFarlane (pronounced “Vah-ree”) is a Scottish author who worked as a journalist before publishing her debut novel, You Had Me At Hello, in 2012. Set in Manchester, the book drew on McFarlane’s own experience living in the city and established the warm, funny voice that would become her trademark. She has since published over a dozen novels, most of them standalones, each built around complicated romantic situations and friendships that feel genuine.
Her books tend to pair laugh-out-loud humor with real emotional weight. If I Never Met You, about a woman who enters a fake relationship with a coworker after a painful breakup, won the RNA Contemporary Romantic Novel Award. Don’t You Forget About Me, Mad About You, and Between Us have all been bestsellers in the UK. Her 2024 novel You Belong with Me and 2025 release Cover Story show she continues to find fresh angles on modern love stories.
McFarlane’s writing stands out in the rom-com genre because she takes her characters’ flaws seriously. Her heroines make bad decisions, hold grudges, and sometimes hurt the people they care about, which makes the eventual happy endings feel earned rather than formulaic.
