Mel Bradshaw studied English and philosophy at the University of Toronto and continued at Oxford. He is a member of Crime Writers of Canada and lives in Toronto. His first novel, Death in the Age of Steam (2004), was shortlisted for an Arthur Ellis Award for best first crime novel.
His Paul Shenstone mysteries are set in 1920s Toronto and follow a police detective whose cases often involve veterans and the lingering effects of the Great War. Quarrel with the Foe (2005) opens the series with the murder of a prominent industrialist whose death connects to soldiers Shenstone knew in Flanders. The series continued with Fire on the Runway (2013) and Winner’s Loss (2017).
