Maximum Ride is James Patterson’s young adult science fiction series about six kids who are 98% human and 2% bird. They have wings, can fly, and possess various other abilities. Max, the 14-year-old leader, narrates as the flock tries to stay alive while being hunted by the scientists who created them.
The Angel Experiment (2005) launched the series, and Patterson continued it through eight sequels ending with Maximum Ride Forever (2015). The books were also adapted into a manga series illustrated by NaRae Lee, running ten volumes from 2009 to 2021. A spinoff series, Hawk (2020), follows Max’s daughter.
