Matthew Lopez is an American playwright whose work has been staged across the United States and in London’s West End. The Whipping Man (2009), set in the final days of the Civil War, was his breakout play and has since received hundreds of productions at regional theaters.
The Inheritance (2020), a two-part epic about gay life in New York City inspired by E.M. Forster’s Howards End, won the Tony Award for Best Play and cemented Lopez’s reputation. His most recent play, Reverberation (2024), continues his interest in intimate character drama. Lopez’s work also appears in the Faber Drama series, a major publisher of contemporary plays.
