Matt Bell is an American author and creative writing professor at Arizona State University. He grew up in Michigan and holds an MFA from Bowling Green State University. His fiction draws on myth, fable, and speculative premises, often set against recognizably American landscapes.
Bell’s debut novel, In the House Upon the Dirt Between the Lake and the Woods (2013), was a finalist for the Young Lions Fiction Award. Scrapper (2015) follows a scrap metal salvager in a depopulated Detroit neighborhood who finds a kidnapped boy. Appleseed (2021), his most ambitious novel, braids three timelines around American mythology and climate collapse, and was named a New York Times Notable Book. He also wrote Baldur’s Gate II for the Boss Fight Books series of video game criticism and Refuse to Be Done, a guide to fiction revision. He is the founding editor of The Collagist and a senior editor at Dzanc Books.
