Mary Ann Cherry is a professional artist and mystery novelist raised in rural Montana. She now lives in Idaho and specializes in western and wildlife painting. She holds a Master Signature membership in Women Artists of the West and a Signature membership in the Pastel Society of America, and her work is held in the permanent collections of several art museums.
Cherry’s fiction draws heavily on her own life. Her protagonist, Jessie O’Bourne, is a professional artist who paints western landscapes and lives in a setting much like the one Cherry grew up in. Jessie’s orange tomcat companion, Jack, gives the series its name. Death on Canvas (2016), the first book, opens with Jessie discovering a dying girl while painting on her father’s property, pulling her into a mystery that connects a century-old art theft to a string of modern-day murders. The second book, Death at Crooked Creek (2018), continues the series with another twisty plot set in Montana’s rural landscape.
