Marvin H. Albert was born in Philadelphia in 1924 and served in the United States Merchant Marine as a radio operator during World War II. After the war, he directed a Philadelphia children’s theater troupe before moving to New York in 1950 to write and edit for Quick and Look magazines. He turned to full-time fiction writing after the success of his 1956 western novel The Law and Jake Wade.

Albert wrote prolifically across genres, producing crime novels, westerns, and adventure stories. His Tony Rome novels were adapted into two films starring Frank Sinatra. His later Pete Sawyer series, featuring a French-American private investigator based in France, is considered some of his best detective fiction. Ten of his books were adapted into feature films during his career.
