Martha Wells is an American science fiction and fantasy author best known for the Murderbot Diaries, a series about a self-aware security robot with social anxiety and a love of soap operas.
Born in 1964 in Fort Worth, Texas, Wells graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in anthropology. She published her first novel, The Element of Fire, in 1993. Over the following decades, she wrote numerous fantasy novels, including the Books of the Raksura series and the Ile-Rien trilogy.
Wells experienced a career resurgence with the publication of All Systems Red in 2017, the first Murderbot novella. The book won the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus awards for Best Novella and became a New York Times bestseller. The series has continued to receive critical acclaim and award nominations.
Her work is known for creative world-building, nuanced characters, and action-packed plots. She lives in Texas with her husband.
