Mark Hodder is a British author who spent many years working in the BBC before turning to fiction writing. He is best known for creating the Burton and Swinburne series, which began with The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack in 2010. The series won the Philip K. Dick Award in 2011, which recognizes distinguished science fiction published in paperback.

The Burton and Swinburne books are set in an alternate Victorian England where history has been disrupted by time travel. Sir Richard Francis Burton, the real-world explorer and polymath, serves as the protagonist alongside the poet Algernon Swinburne. The six-book series blends steampunk technology, historical figures, and science fiction concepts including eugenically engineered animals serving as communication devices and transport. The series concluded with The Rise of the Automated Aristocrats in 2015.

Beyond Burton and Swinburne, Hodder has written the Black Pentagram series, a set of three shorter works, as well as the Macallister Fogg stories and contributions to the Sexton Blake shared universe. He also maintains an active presence in British genre fiction communities and has contributed to anthologies including Encounters of Sherlock Holmes.
