Marjane Satrapi is an Iranian-born French graphic novelist, illustrator, and filmmaker. She grew up in Tehran during the Islamic Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War before moving to Europe as a teenager. Those experiences became the basis for Persepolis, her autobiographical graphic memoir that made her an international literary figure when it was published in the early 2000s.
Beyond Persepolis, Satrapi has written graphic works like Embroideries (2003), which depicts Iranian women sharing stories over tea, and Chicken with Plums (2004), about a heartbroken musician in 1950s Tehran. She has also published children’s books, including Monsters Are Afraid of the Moon and The Sigh. In 2007, she co-directed an animated film adaptation of Persepolis that was nominated for an Academy Award. Her most recent graphic work, Woman, Life, Freedom (2023), addresses the women’s protest movement in Iran.
