Maggie Barbieri was an American mystery writer who published ten novels between 2006 and 2016 across two series. She spent much of her career in publishing, working as an editor, and brought that background to her own fiction. Her books are cozy mysteries with a suburban New York setting, sharp humor, and female protagonists who stumble into criminal investigations despite having no law enforcement training.
Her first series, Murder 101 Mystery, ran for seven books from 2006 to 2012. It follows Alison Bergeron, an English professor at a fictional college in the Bronx, who keeps finding herself entangled in murder cases. Alison’s relationship with NYPD detective Bobby Crawford adds a romantic thread to the mysteries. The Maeve Conlon series, which began in 2013 with Once Upon a Lie, shifts to a different protagonist – a single mother and bar owner in a Westchester County town whose ordinary life hides darker capabilities. The Maeve Conlon books have a grittier edge than the Murder 101 novels, though they retain Barbieri’s dry wit.
