M. John Harrison is a British writer who has been publishing fiction since the late 1960s. He was part of the New Wave science fiction movement and served as literary editor of New Worlds magazine under Michael Moorcock. His Viriconium sequence, beginning with The Pastel City in 1971, is a series of novels and stories set in a far-future dying earth. The books are known for their refusal to settle into conventional fantasy world-building.
His later Kefahuchi Tract trilogy, starting with Light in 2002, applies a similar approach to space opera. Harrison has also written realistic literary fiction, including the climbing novel Climbers and The Sunken Land Begins to Rise Again, which won the Goldsmiths Prize in 2020.
