M.J. Scott is a Melbourne-based author who writes fantasy with strong romantic elements. She grew up reading Tolkien alongside Georgette Heyer and Jane Austen, and that blend of fantasy worldbuilding and romantic storytelling runs through all her work. Her debut novel, Shadow Kin (2011), launched the Half-Light City series with Roc, an imprint of Penguin Group USA.
The Half-Light City books established her reputation in dark romantic fantasy, earning RITA Award nominations and Australian Romance Readers Association (ARRA) finalist spots for all four entries. She followed that series with the Four Arts trilogy, a romantic historical fantasy set in the kingdom of Anglion, featuring royal witches and court intrigue. The Daughter of Ravens trilogy continues in the same world with new characters.
Scott’s TechWitch series moves into futuristic urban fantasy, set in a near-future San Francisco where magic and technology coexist. The Wild Side trilogy takes a darker turn with werewolf shifter romance. Across all her series, Scott delivers fantasy worlds where the romantic relationships are as carefully built as the magic systems. She also writes contemporary romance as Melanie Scott and has won the Romance Writers of Australia Emerald Award and the Romance Writers of New Zealand Clendon Award.
