Louise O’Neill is an Irish writer from Clonakilty, West Cork, who broke out with her debut Only Ever Yours in 2014. The novel drew comparisons to dystopian classics for its unflinching look at beauty standards and female worth. Her follow-up, Asking For It, tackled sexual consent and became one of the most talked-about Irish novels of the decade.
O’Neill writes across genres but returns again and again to questions about how women are seen and treated. The Surface Breaks retells The Little Mermaid through a feminist lens, while After the Silence is a psychological thriller set in rural Ireland. Her books are direct, uncomfortable at times, and hard to put down.
