Louise Fein writes historical fiction that examines how ordinary people become caught up in the moral questions of their time. Her debut, Daughter of the Reich (published in the US as People Like Us) in 2020, tells the story of a German girl who falls in love with a Jewish boy in 1930s Leipzig. The novel explores how ideology and propaganda shape personal relationships.
The Hidden Child (2021) moves to 1920s England and deals with the eugenics movement, while The London Bookshop Affair (2024) is set in Cold War London. Each of Fein’s novels takes on a different historical period and finds characters facing difficult choices between loyalty, love, and conscience. Her upcoming Book of Forbidden Words is set for 2026.
