Louis Joseph Vance was an American novelist active in the early 20th century. He is best remembered for creating the Lone Wolf, a reformed gentleman thief named Michael Lanyard who appeared in a series beginning with The Lone Wolf (1914). The character proved enormously popular and was adapted into a long series of films. The Lone Wolf books continued with The False Faces (1918), Alias the Lone Wolf (1921), and many sequels, with some entries appearing decades after Vance’s death in 1933.
Vance’s standalone novels, published between 1904 and 1934, include adventure stories, mysteries, and romantic thrillers typical of the early 20th century popular fiction market. Titles like The Brass Bowl (1907), The Black Bag (1908), The Bronze Bell (1909), and The Fortune Hunter (1910) were widely read in their day. His writing reflects the adventure fiction style of the pre-World War I era.
