Louann Brizendine is a neuropsychiatrist at the University of California, San Francisco, who writes popular science books about the brain. Her first book, The Female Brain (2006), became a bestseller by breaking down neuroscience research into accessible explanations of how hormones and brain chemistry influence women’s behavior, emotions, and relationships. The Male Brain (2009) followed with a similar examination of men’s neurology.
Her most recent book, The Upgrade (2021), focuses on the changes women’s brains undergo during menopause and beyond. All three books are aimed at general readers rather than specialists, and they draw on both Brizendine’s clinical practice and published research. Her work has generated both popular interest and academic debate about how much of human behavior can be attributed to brain differences.
