Loren D. Estleman has been writing crime fiction and westerns since the mid-1970s, producing an enormous body of work that spans multiple genres. His best-known creation is Amos Walker, a Detroit private detective in the classic hardboiled tradition. The Walker series, which began with Motor City Blue (1980), has run for over 30 novels and uses the changing landscape of Detroit as both backdrop and character. Estleman also writes the Peter Macklin series about a professional hitman, and the Valentino series about a film archivist who stumbles into murder investigations.

On the western side, Estleman’s Page Murdock series follows a U.S. Deputy Marshal in the frontier West through ten novels starting with The High Rocks (1979). His standalone westerns, including Bloody Season (1987) and The Ballad of Black Bart (2017), are fictionalized accounts of real historical figures and events. He has also written a seven-book Detroit series that traces the city’s history from Prohibition through the 1990s, and he contributed to The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, a long-running multi-author pastiche series. Estleman is one of the few authors to have won awards in both mystery and western fiction.
