Lois Lowry has been writing children’s and young adult fiction since her debut, A Summer to Die, in 1977. Over nearly five decades, she has published more than 100 books across multiple series and genres. Her best-known work is The Giver (1993), a dystopian novel that became one of the most widely read young adult books of the twentieth century and won the Newbery Medal. She also won the Newbery for Number the Stars (1989), a historical novel set during the German occupation of Denmark.

Beyond those landmark titles, Lowry has written the Anastasia Krupnik series (9 books), the Sam Krupnik spinoff (4 books), the Gooney Bird Greene chapter books, and contributed extensively to the Dear America diary fiction series. She has also published picture books, nonfiction memoir, and edited anthologies. Her range from lighthearted comedy in the Krupnik books to the moral weight of The Giver shows an author comfortable working across very different registers for young readers.
