Lindsey Davis is an English novelist best known for her historical mysteries set in ancient Rome. She was born in 1949 in Birmingham and studied English at Oxford. Before becoming a full-time writer, she worked as a civil servant. The Silver Pigs (1989), her first novel, introduced Marcus Didius Falco, a private informer in first-century Rome, and launched a 20-book series that ran through Nemesis (2010).
Falco works in the Rome of Emperor Vespasian, taking on cases that range from stolen silver to political intrigue across the provinces. Davis followed the Falco series with the Flavia Albia mysteries, featuring Falco’s adopted British daughter as a female informer in the same world. That series began with The Ides of April (2013) and runs to There Will Be Bodies (2025), adding 15 novels. Her standalone works include The Course of Honour (1997), a novel about Vespasian and his mistress Antonia Caenis, Rebels and Traitors (2009), set during the English Civil War, and Master and God (2012), set in Domitian’s Rome.
