Lilian Harry was born as Donna Thomson in Gosport, near Portsmouth Harbour, and grew up during the Blitz as the youngest of four children. Her childhood experience of wartime Portsmouth later became the foundation for several of her best-known novel series. She worked in the Civil Service before moving to Devon to be near her sailor husband. After that marriage ended, she raised two children in the Midlands, remarried, and spent twelve years in the Lake District before settling in a village on the edge of Dartmoor.

Her early novels, published under the pen name Donna Baker, include romance fiction and two family saga trilogies: the Glassmakers Saga, set in the Stourbridge glass industry, and the Carpetmakers’ Trilogy, set among the carpet weavers of Kidderminster. Under the name Lilian Harry, she turned to longer historical fiction rooted in the places she knew firsthand. The April Grove and Corner House series are both set in wartime Portsmouth, the Burracombe Village series follows a Devon community through the 1950s, and the Thursday books follow a young VAD nurse at the Royal Naval hospital near her birthplace. She has also written a guide to writing romantic fiction.
