Libby Fischer Hellmann is a Washington, D.C. native who moved to Chicago in 1978 and has used the city as the backdrop for most of her fiction ever since. She holds a BA in history from the University of Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in film production from NYU. Before turning to fiction, she worked in broadcast news at NBC and PBS, where she helped produce coverage of the Watergate hearings.

Hellmann’s first novel, An Eye for Murder, introduced video producer and single mother Ellie Foreman in 2002. The book was nominated for an Anthony Award for Best First Novel. She later created a second Chicago-based series featuring private investigator Georgia Davis, starting with Easy Innocence. Her standalone historical thrillers, collected under The Revolution Sagas banner, explore how periods of political upheaval affect ordinary people, with settings ranging from 1960s Chicago to revolutionary Iran to Cold War Cuba. She has also edited Chicago Blues, a short story anthology featuring more than 20 prominent Chicago crime fiction writers including Sara Paretsky and Stuart Kaminsky.
