Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a mathematics lecturer at Christ Church, Oxford, who spent 26 years teaching there. He created the name by translating “Charles Lutwidge” into Latin and then reversing and anglicising the result. Outside of his literary work, he published eleven books on mathematics and was an accomplished amateur photographer.

Carroll’s most famous works grew from a story he told on a July afternoon in 1862 to the three Liddell sisters during a boat trip on the Thames. Alice Liddell asked him to write it down, and the handwritten manuscript he gave her became the basis for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865). The sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, followed in 1871. Both books are among the most widely translated and quoted in the English language.

His later novels Sylvie and Bruno (1889) and Sylvie and Bruno Concluded (1893) blended fairy-tale fantasy with social commentary set in Victorian England. He also wrote nonsense poetry, including The Hunting of the Snark and the famous poem “Jabberwocky.” Carroll died in 1898 at the age of 65.
