Leighton Gage was an American-born author who spent most of his adult life in Brazil. That experience shaped his fiction, particularly the Chief Inspector Mario Silva series, which is set in the country and deals with crimes rooted in Brazilian society and politics. Gage began the series with Blood of the Wicked in 2008 and continued it until his death in 2013, with The Ways of Evil Men published posthumously in 2014.
The Mario Silva books were praised for their vivid portrayal of Brazil and their willingness to tackle difficult subjects like land disputes, corruption, and trafficking. Gage wrote eleven entries in the series, including some editions published in Dutch translation. His work brought international crime fiction set in South America to a wider English-language readership.
