Laurie Halse Anderson writes for young adults and children. She is best known for Speak (1999), a novel about a ninth-grader who stops talking after being sexually assaulted at a party. The book became one of the most widely taught YA novels in American schools and was adapted into a film starring Kristen Stewart and later a graphic novel illustrated by Emily Carroll.

Her range is wider than Speak might suggest. The Seeds of America trilogy (Chains, Forge, Ashes) follows enslaved characters during the American Revolution. The Vet Volunteers series, originally published as Wild at Heart, is a 17-book children’s series about kids working at an animal clinic. She has also written picture books, a memoir in verse called Shout, and a Wonder Woman graphic novel. She was named National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature in 2009.
