Laurell K. Hamilton is an American author who writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance. She is best known for the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series, which helped establish urban fantasy as a mainstream genre.
Born in 1963 in Heber Springs, Arkansas, Hamilton grew up in Indiana and earned a degree in English from Marion College (now Indiana Wesleyan University). She published her first novel, Nightseer, in 1992, and Guilty Pleasures, the first Anita Blake book, followed in 1993.
The Anita Blake series became a New York Times bestseller and spawned a comic book adaptation and merchandise. Hamilton also writes the Merry Gentry series, featuring a faerie princess working as a private investigator in Los Angeles.
Hamilton’s work is known for complex supernatural societies, detailed world-building, and protagonists who accumulate power and relationships over time. Her books have evolved from action-focused urban fantasy to include more romance and exploration of polyamorous relationships. She lives in St. Louis, Missouri, where her Anita Blake series is set.
