Kyle Mills was an established thriller writer before Vince Flynn asked him to continue the Mitch Rapp series. His father was an FBI agent, and Mills spent his childhood around law enforcement and intelligence professionals. That background shows in his fiction.
Mills published his first novel, Rising Phoenix, in 1997, the same year Flynn’s Rapp debut appeared. He wrote nine standalone thrillers before taking over the Rapp series in 2015. The transition wasn’t planned long in advance. Flynn was dying of cancer and wanted to know his character would continue. He chose Mills after reading his work and meeting him personally.
The Survivor was the first Mills-authored Rapp novel, completed from Flynn’s partial manuscript and notes. Mills has since written 10 more, developing his own take on the character while maintaining continuity with Flynn’s vision. The books continue to hit bestseller lists. Rapp’s fanbase accepted the transition more smoothly than many inherited series manage.
Mills writes from his home in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. His process involves extensive outlining before drafting. Each Rapp novel goes through multiple revisions, with Mills particularly focused on action choreography and technical accuracy. He consults with security professionals and weapons experts to keep the details grounded.
Beyond Rapp, Mills has written Robert Ludlum continuation novels and contributed to other franchises. He remains most associated with Rapp, having written more books in the series than Flynn himself completed.
