Krystal Sutherland grew up in Australia and published her first novel, Our Chemical Hearts, in 2016. That book, a bittersweet high school romance, was adapted into a film in 2020. She followed it with A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares (2017), about a family cursed to live out their deepest fears.
Her later work has leaned more heavily into dark fantasy and horror. House of Hollow (2021) follows three sisters with a mysterious past who begin to unravel when the eldest disappears. The Invocations (2024) is set in London and involves witchcraft, a serial killer, and three young women bound by a shared enemy. Sutherland’s writing often pairs genre thrills with honest portrayals of grief and anxiety, giving her novels a weight that goes beyond standard YA horror.
