Kristin Cashore grew up in northeastern Pennsylvania and earned her MFA from the Center for the Study of Children’s Literature at Simmons College. Before becoming a full-time writer, she worked as a dog runner, editorial assistant, packer in a candy factory, and freelance writer. Her debut novel Graceling (2008) became a New York Times bestseller and won the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Children’s Literature.
The Graceling Realm series is set in the Seven Kingdoms, a world where certain people are born with a Grace, an extreme natural ability. The first three novels each center on a different heroine: Katsa in Graceling, Fire in the prequel Fire (2009), and Bitterblue in the novel of the same name (2012). After a long gap, Cashore returned to the series with Winterkeep (2021) and Seasparrow (2022), which take the story into new territory and introduce science fiction elements alongside the fantasy. Outside the Graceling world, she has written Jane, Unlimited (2017), a genre-bending standalone, and There Is a Door in this Darkness (2024).
