Koushun Takami is a Japanese author whose career has been defined by a single work: Battle Royale. Originally published in Japan in 1999, the novel describes a dystopian program in which a class of junior high school students is dropped on an island and forced to fight until only one survivor remains. The book became a cultural phenomenon, leading to a 2000 film adaptation directed by Kinji Fukasaku and a manga adaptation illustrated by Masami Kurumada.
The manga ran for 15 volumes in its original Japanese edition, with English-language versions published between 2003 and 2006. A separate set of Battle Royale volumes was also published, along with companion works like Angels’ Border and a Remastered edition. The complete body of work associated with Battle Royale includes the original novel, its manga adaptation, and various collected editions.
Battle Royale is frequently cited as a precursor to later survival fiction, including The Hunger Games. The novel’s premise of young people forced into lethal competition by a government program established many of the genre conventions that became common in the 2010s. Takami has published little else, making Battle Royale essentially his entire literary output.
