Khaled Hosseini is an Afghan-American author whose novels are set primarily in Afghanistan and among the Afghan diaspora. His debut, The Kite Runner (2003), became an international bestseller and was later adapted into a film. It tells the story of a young boy growing up in Kabul before the Soviet invasion, and his later life as an immigrant in the United States.
His second novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns (2007), follows two women whose lives intersect in war-torn Kabul. And the Mountains Echoed (2012), his third novel, traces a family across generations and continents. Hosseini has also written Sea Prayer (2018), an illustrated short novel inspired by the refugee crisis. He has been a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador since 2006.
