Kevin Powers is an American novelist and poet. Born in 1980 in Richmond, Virginia, he enlisted in the Army at seventeen and served as a machine gunner in Iraq from 2004 to 2005 in Mosul and Tal Afar.

After his honorable discharge, Powers earned a BA in English from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MFA in poetry from the University of Texas at Austin as a Michener Fellow. His debut novel, The Yellow Birds (2012), drew on his wartime experience and won the Guardian First Book Award and the PEN/Hemingway Award. Dave Eggers called it “easily the saddest book I’ve read in many years.”

Powers also writes poetry. His collection Letter Composed During a Lull in the Fighting was shortlisted for the TS Eliot Prize.
