Kevin Kwan was born in Singapore into an established Chinese Singaporean family and moved to the United States at age eleven. He studied at the University of Houston-Clear Lake and Parsons School of Design before working as a creative professional for clients including The New York Times and MoMA. He began writing Crazy Rich Asians in 2009 while caring for his dying father, drawing on their shared memories of life in Singapore.
Crazy Rich Asians (2013) became a bestseller and was adapted into a hit 2018 film that grossed $240 million worldwide. The trilogy follows Rachel Chu as she discovers her boyfriend’s family is among Singapore’s wealthiest, and Kwan uses the story to satirize the ultra-rich across Singapore, Hong Kong, and mainland China. His standalone novels Sex and Vanity and Lies and Weddings apply the same comedic eye to different settings, from the Amalfi Coast to Hawaii.
