Kevin Crossley-Holland has spent more than six decades writing about the myths, legends, and landscapes of northern Europe and the British Isles. His career began in the 1960s with translations and retellings of Anglo-Saxon stories, and he has since published novels, picture books, poetry collections, anthologies, and non-fiction across a remarkably broad range.
His Arthur trilogy, starting with The Seeing Stone in 2000, brought him a new generation of readers. Set in the Welsh Marches during the time of the Crusades, the books follow a boy named Arthur de Caldicot who discovers a mysterious obsidian stone that shows him visions of King Arthur. The trilogy won the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize.
Beyond fiction, Crossley-Holland’s retellings of Norse myths and British folk tales have become standard references. His poetry, rooted in the landscapes of East Anglia and Norfolk, reflects the same attention to language and place that runs through all his work.
