Kazuo Ishiguro was born in Nagasaki, Japan in 1954 and moved to England with his family at age five. He studied English and Philosophy at the University of Kent and later earned a master’s degree in creative writing from the University of East Anglia. His debut novel, A Pale View of Hills, was published in 1982 and won the Winifred Holtby Memorial Prize.

Ishiguro’s work often explores memory, self-deception, and the passage of time. The Remains of the Day (1989), about an English butler reflecting on his years of service, won the Booker Prize and was adapted into an acclaimed film starring Anthony Hopkins. Never Let Me Go (2005) moved into science fiction territory with a story about clones raised for organ harvesting. His most recent novel, Klara and the Sun (2021), tells the story of an artificial friend observing the human world.

He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2017. His short fiction collection Nocturnes (2009) and the graphic novel The Summer We Crossed Europe in the Rain (2024) show his range beyond the novel form.
