Katherena Vermette is a Red River Metis (Michif) writer from Treaty 1 territory in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her debut poetry collection, North End Love Songs (2012), won the Governor General’s Literary Award for Poetry. Her first novel, The Break (2016), became a Canadian national bestseller and was adapted for CBC television.
Vermette writes across a wide range. The Girl Called Echo graphic novel series tells Metis history through the eyes of a modern teenager. The Seven Teachings Stories are children’s books rooted in Anishinaabe traditions. She contributed to This Place: 150 Years Retold, a collaborative graphic novel anthology by Indigenous creators. Her work consistently returns to Metis identity, Winnipeg’s North End, and the lived experience of Indigenous communities in Canada.
