Kate Winkler Dawson is a journalist and documentary producer who has built a second career writing about historical true crime. Her books dig into cases from the late 1800s and early 1900s, periods when forensic science was still being invented and investigators had to rely on instinct as much as evidence.
Her debut, Death in the Air (2017), examines two killers stalking London in 1952, one human and one environmental, weaving together a serial murder case with the Great Smog disaster. American Sherlock (2020) follows Edward Oscar Heinrich, a largely forgotten forensic scientist who helped solve some of the most notorious American crimes of the early twentieth century. Later books, including All That Is Wicked (2022) and The Ghost Club (2023), continue her focus on the intersection of crime, science, and history.
Dawson also hosts the podcast Tenfold More Wicked, which covers historical crime cases. Her writing is well-researched and relies on primary sources, court records, and archival material to reconstruct events that happened decades ago.
