Kate Novak is an American fantasy author who graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in chemistry before finding her way into tabletop gaming fiction. She married game designer Jeff Grubb, and the two began writing together in the Forgotten Realms setting for TSR, Inc. Their partnership produced some of the most popular novels in the Forgotten Realms line during the late 1980s and 1990s.

Their debut novel, Azure Bonds (1988), launched the Finder’s Stone trilogy and introduced the warrior Alias and her companion Dragonbait. The book proved popular enough to be adapted into a computer RPG the following year. Novak and Grubb continued with The Wyvern’s Spur (1990) and Song Of The Saurials (1991), then contributed to The Harpers series with Masquerades (1995) and Finder’s Bane (1997). They capped their Forgotten Realms work with Tymora’s Luck (1997), part of the Lost Gods trilogy, which crossed over between the Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance settings. Novak also had early credits in the HeartQuest gamebook line, writing Lady of the Winds (1984) for TSR’s interactive fiction series aimed at teen readers.
