June Hur was born in South Korea, grew up in Canada, and writes young adult historical fiction set during Korea’s Joseon dynasty. Her debut, The Silence of Bones (2020), is a murder mystery that follows a young servant girl working for the police bureau in 1800s Joseon. It was praised for its atmospheric setting and careful historical detail.
Hur has published four standalone novels so far, with a fifth, Behind Five Willows, due in 2026. Each book takes a different angle on Joseon history, from missing-persons cases in The Forest of Stolen Girls to palace intrigue in The Red Palace. Her writing fills a gap in YA fiction, offering readers Korean historical settings that are rarely explored in English-language novels. She has also contributed to the anthology Mermaids Never Drown.
