Julie Cantrell grew up in Walker, Louisiana, earned degrees from Louisiana State University in communication sciences and disorders, and worked as a certified speech-language pathologist before turning to writing. She served as editor-in-chief of the Southern Literary Review and runs her own editorial consultancy, BlueSpark Editorial.
Her debut novel, Into the Free (2012), follows a young girl of mixed Choctaw and white heritage in Depression-era Mississippi. It hit the New York Times bestseller list and won the Christy Award for both Debut Novel and Book of the Year. Its sequel, When Mountains Move (2013), continues the story in wartime Colorado. Her later novels, The Feathered Bone (2016) and Perennials (2017), are contemporary standalones set in Louisiana and Mississippi. She has also written children’s picture books, including the “God Is with Me” pair (2009) and Dog Saves Duck (2022), which is based on the true story of her family’s golden retriever befriending a duckling after a storm.
