Julian May (1931-2017) was an American science fiction and fantasy author whose career spanned from the 1950s to the 2010s. She is best remembered for the Saga of Pliocene Exile, beginning with The Many-Colored Land (1981), which sends groups of misfits back to Earth’s Pliocene epoch through a one-way time gate. There they discover a society of alien exiles already living in prehistoric Europe.

The Pliocene Exile saga connects to her Galactic Milieu series, which takes place in the future and follows humanity’s integration into a galactic community of psychic alien races. May also wrote the Boreal Moon fantasy trilogy, the Rampart Worlds science fiction series, and contributed to the collaborative Trillium fantasy series with Marion Zimmer Bradley and Andre Norton. Earlier in her career, she wrote numerous non-fiction books for young readers about science and sports.
