Judy Nunn was born in Perth, Western Australia, in 1945 and had a long career as an actress before becoming a novelist. She landed her first professional stage role at the age of twelve with the Perth Playhouse, later moved to Sydney and then London, where she performed in Shakespeare productions and appeared on BBC television and radio. Back in Australia, she became a household name through television roles on The Box, Sons and Daughters, and most famously as Ailsa Stewart on Home and Away, a part she played for fifteen years from the show’s debut in 1988.
Nunn began writing in the 1980s with two children’s adventure novels, Eye in the Storm and Eye in the City. She turned to adult fiction in the early 1990s, and her first three novels, The Glitter Game, Centre Stage, and Araluen, all became bestsellers. She left Home and Away in 2000 to focus on writing full-time and has since published over twenty novels. Her books have sold more than one million copies in Australia. In 2015, she was made a Member of the Order of Australia for her contributions to the performing arts and literature.
Most of her novels are historical fiction set in Australia, drawing on real events and locations. Maralinga tackles the British atomic weapons tests in the South Australian desert, Territory is set in Darwin during World War II, and Beneath the Southern Cross spans two centuries of Sydney’s history. She researches each book thoroughly and travels to the locations she writes about.
