Joyce Lionarons writes historical mystery novels set in medieval England. Her two series, the Matthew Cordwainer Medieval Mysteries and the Gavin Rownt Medieval Mysteries, both take place in the fifteenth century and follow amateur detectives who get pulled into murder investigations in their communities. Lionarons has published prolifically since 2018, with nearly 30 books across the two series.
The Matthew Cordwainer series, which began first, features a shoemaker in Bury St Edmunds who repeatedly finds himself investigating crimes that the local authorities cannot or will not solve. The Gavin Rownt series, set in Norwich, follows a different protagonist through the political and religious conflicts of the same era. Both series draw on the daily life, social structures, and legal systems of medieval England to create mysteries that feel rooted in their time period.
