Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) was one of the greatest satirists in the English language. Gulliver’s Travels, published in 1726, uses the device of voyages to imaginary lands to mock human nature, politics, and philosophy. “A Modest Proposal,” his essay satirically suggesting that the Irish poor sell their children as food, remains one of the most famous pieces of satirical writing ever produced.
