John Miles was a pen name used by Jack M. Bickham, an American novelist and writing professor at the University of Oklahoma. Under this name, Bickham wrote two mystery series in the 1990s: the Laura Michaels books, set at a retirement center in Oklahoma, and the Johnnie Baker books, set in a small Colorado town.
The Laura Michaels series follows the assistant director of Timberdale Retirement Center as she investigates crimes with the help of the facility’s residents. The Johnnie Baker series features a former actress who becomes sheriff of Tenoclock, Colorado. Both series reflect Bickham’s knack for pairing likable amateur sleuths with small-town settings.
