John Elder Robison grew up without knowing why he felt different from everyone around him. He dropped out of school, taught himself electronics, and ended up building guitars and flame-shooting special effects for KISS in the 1970s. He later ran a successful car restoration business before being diagnosed with Asperger syndrome as an adult. His brother is memoirist Augusten Burroughs, who wrote about their difficult childhood in Running with Scissors.

Robison’s first book, Look Me in the Eye, came out in 2007 when he was 49 years old. It became a New York Times bestseller and made him one of the most recognized voices on autism in America. He followed it with Be Different, Raising Cubby (about his autistic son), and Switched On, which chronicles his experience as a research subject in brain stimulation studies. He has also contributed to anthologies on autism and neurodiversity.
