The Aegypt Cycle Reading Order

John Crowley was born in Presque Isle, Maine, in 1942 and moved to New York City after college to work in documentary film. He published his first novel, The Deep, in 1975, followed by Beasts (1976) and Engine Summer (1979), all science fiction. His fourth novel, Little, Big (1981), won the World Fantasy Award and established his reputation as one of the most original voices in American fiction. Harold Bloom included it among his recommended works, calling it a masterpiece.

In 1987, Crowley began the Aegypt Cycle, an ambitious four-volume work comprising The Solitudes, Love & Sleep, Daemonomania, and Endless Things (completed in 2007). The series weaves together Renaissance magic, Hermeticism, and the lives of modern scholars searching for hidden patterns in history. Since 1993, Crowley has taught creative writing at Yale University, and he received the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Literature.

Beyond his novels, Crowley has contributed short fiction to numerous anthologies and has published several collections of his own stories, including Novelties and Souvenirs and And Go Like This. His 2017 novel Ka: Dar Oakley in the Ruin of Ymr told the story of human civilization through the eyes of an immortal crow. He is also a contributor to the Akashic Noir anthology series, which collects city-based crime fiction from writers around the world.
