John Callahan was a cartoonist and author whose twelve books mix autobiography, cartoon collections, and children’s fiction. His first book, Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot (1989), is a memoir that was later adapted into a 2018 film. Through the 1990s he published a string of cartoon collections with characteristically provocative titles: Digesting the Child Within, Do What He Says! He’s Crazy!, and What Kind of a God Would Allow a Thing Like This to Happen?!!
His later books include Will the Real John Callahan Please Stand Up? (1998), a quasi-memoir, and two cartoon compilations from the early 2000s, Get Down!! Dog Cartoons and Levels of Insanity. He also wrote The King of Things and the Cranberry Clown (1994), a children’s book that stands apart from the rest of his catalog. Most of his work appeared between 1989 and 1995, with a few final titles arriving in the early 2000s.
