Jodi Picoult was born in 1966 on Long Island, New York. She wrote her first story at age five and studied creative writing at Princeton University, graduating in 1987. She later earned a master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Her debut novel, Songs of the Humpback Whale, was published in 1992, and she has released at least one book nearly every year since.

Picoult’s novels typically center on families in crisis, often building toward a courtroom scene where characters face impossible choices. My Sister’s Keeper asks whether parents can conceive a child to save a sibling. Nineteen Minutes follows the aftermath of a school shooting from multiple perspectives. Small Great Things confronts racial bias through the story of a labor and delivery nurse accused of harming a newborn. She co-wrote the YA series Between the Lines with her daughter Samantha van Leer, and Mad Honey (2022) with Jennifer Finney Boylan. Her most recent novel, By Any Other Name (2024), reimagines the life of Emilia Bassano, thought by some scholars to be Shakespeare’s Dark Lady.
