Jim Butcher is a best-selling American author best known for his contemporary fantasy series The Dresden Files. He also wrote the high fantasy series Codex Alera and the steampunk series The Cinder Spires.
Born in Independence, Missouri, in 1971, Butcher wrote his first novel when he was 19. He famously wrote Storm Front, the first Dresden Files book, as an exercise for a writing class after a disagreement with his teacher about the “rules” of writing. The result was a successful blend of hardboiled detective fiction and urban fantasy.
Butcher’s work is known for its fast-paced action, witty dialogue, and detailed world-building. The Dresden Files has been adapted into a television series, a role-playing game, and a graphic novel series. Butcher is a martial artist and fan of table-top gaming, interests that often influence the physical and tactical aspects of his stories.
